A new survey from Glassdoor found that nearly three in five (57%) people reported benefits and perks being among their top considerations before accepting a job.  With one and five employees looking for a job in 2016, employers need to take note and make their benefits package a point of differentiation.  Standard benefits (health insurance, 401 (k), etc.) are no longer enough to make a company a compelling place to work.  The Glassdoor research went as far to say that benefits and perks are even more important now in the current job market, especially for millennials.

Although employee wellness is often associated with health insurance and lower medical expenditures, employers that see employee wellness program from a broader perspective quickly realize it is a great perk to offer employees and helps strengthen employee engagement.  Creative benefits and perks, like employee wellness, are ways employers can differentiate themselves from others seeking to recruit talent.  Below is a list of some of our favorite unique wellness benefits being offered by leading employers.

  • Netflix offers one paid year of maternity and paternity leave to new parents. They also allow parents to return part-time or full-time and take leave as needed throughout the year.
  • REI encourages its employees to get outside by offering two paid days off a year (called “Yay Days”) to enjoy their favorite outside activity.
  • Salesforce employees receive six days of paid volunteer time off a year, as well as $1,000 a year to donate to a charity of their choice.
  • Burton employees receive season ski passes and “snow days” to hit the slopes after a big snowfall.
  • Twillo offers employees a Kindle plus $30 a month to purchase books.
  • Google provides the surviving spouse or partner of a deceased employee 50% of their salary for the next 10 years.
