For example, one\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellable.co\/blog\/happy-employees-13-percent-more-productive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">experiment<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">\u00a0found that employees who feel happy while performing their tasks are 13% more productive. Other studies have found that organizational happiness is associated with increased\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2005-05102-004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">task persistence<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18954157\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">creativity<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2006-05928-010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retention<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">, and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0022435908000456\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">customer satisfaction<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">Despite the importance of organizational joy, employees experience it far less than they want or expect to. For instance, one\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kearney.com\/leadership-change-organization\/article\/?\/a\/joy-at-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">\u00a0conducted by Kearny, a global management consulting firm, found that while 90% of employees expected to feel joy, only 37% report feeling it, leaving 53% of employees with a \u201cjoy gap.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.5; text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 519px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; display: block;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wellable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Joy%20Gap.svg\" alt=\"Joy Gap\" width=\"519\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; text-align: center;\">Source: Analysis of 2018 A.T. Kearney survey by Siegel + Gale<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">To reap the benefits of organizational joy, businesses must find ways to minimize this discrepancy between expectations and reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 36px; line-height: 1.5; font-weight: normal;\" style=\"font-size: 36px; line-height: 1.5; font-weight: normal;\" id=\"six-tips-for-increasing-levels-of-organizational-joy\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Six Tips For Increasing Levels Of Organizational Joy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">Employees can lower the delta between expected and experienced levels of organizational joy by adopting the following strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Set the tone:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Team leaders\u2019 moods are contagious. If they seem pleased with the company\u2019s financial state, excited about its purpose, or just generally happy, employees will be prone to mirror their joy. Because of this, employers should make special efforts to express their happiness.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"font-size: 18px;\" start=\"2\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Articulate a meaningful purpose: <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: black;\">In addition to uncovering the joy gap, the Kearney survey found that organizational joy is strongly associated with whether an employee (i) feels committed to achieving the company\u2019s vision and strategy for the future, (ii) believes that the company makes a positive societal contribution, and (iii) understands the company\u2019s vision for the future and how they fit into achieving these goals.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The upshot is clear.<\/span> <span style=\"color: black;\">As Michael Schrage, visiting research fellow at the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90689328\/a-net-purpose-score-is-a-better-way-to-measure-employee-engagement#:~:text=People%20want%20more%20than%20a%20fair%20day%E2%80%99s%20pay%20for%20a%20fair%20day%E2%80%99s%20work%3B%20they%20want%20to%20find%20alignment%20with%20purpose.%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">, \u201cpeople want more than a fair day\u2019s pay for a fair day\u2019s work; they want to find alignment with purpose\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"font-size: 18px;\" start=\"3\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Express gratitude: <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: black;\">It\u2019s difficult to feel joyful about a job that one doesn\u2019t believe they are good at, and it\u2019s difficult to feel successful without positive feedback from team leaders. To create a joyful workplace, employers must create systematic processes that allow managers and peers to express gratitude and recognize employees\u2019 hard work.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"font-size: 18px;\" start=\"4\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Don\u2019t force it:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: black;\"> Because joy has such a strong positive impact on individual and organizational well-being, employers may feel tempted either to ignore the existence of negative emotions within their organizations or to outright discourage employees from experiencing them.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Though this instinct is understandable, it is counterproductive. For example, one\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28703602\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">\u00a0found that people who habitually avoid acknowledging challenging emotions often end up feeling worse. Employers implementing joy-boosting strategies can avoid this outcome by offering workers a dedicated space to express negative sentiments towards their jobs or organizations.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"font-size: 18px;\" start=\"6\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Provide adequate mental health care benefits<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: black;\">: Some mental ailments (e.g., depression or anxiety) make it extremely difficult to feel happy and relaxed. Employees suffering from one or more of these mental health conditions may not be able to experience organizational joy without first receiving help from a mental health professional. Organizations should make sure that their professional support services are designed to meet the needs of their diverse demographic and that employees are aware that these resources are available<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Be mindful of the many flavors of happiness: <\/span><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellable.co\/blog\/flavors-of-happiness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Happiness comes in many different varieties<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0(e.g., free-floating, attached, authentic, autonomous, etc.). To enhance the power of the aforementioned joy-boosting strategies, employers should combine them with tailor-made tactics to cultivate specific flavors of happiness.
