{"id":13025,"date":"2019-02-18T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-02-18T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wellable.co\/blog\/pain-management-another-reason-for-sleep-promotion\/"},"modified":"2022-10-11T04:26:11","modified_gmt":"2022-10-11T08:26:11","slug":"pain-management-another-reason-for-sleep-promotion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wellable.co\/blog\/pain-management-another-reason-for-sleep-promotion\/","title":{"rendered":"Pain Management: Another Reason For Sleep Promotion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pain is cited as the most common reason Americans access the health care system. \u00a0It is a leading cause of disability, and it is a major contributor to health care costs.\u00a0 Health economists from Johns Hopkins University published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2012\/09\/120911091100.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> in The Journal of Pain suggesting chronic pain alone costs the United States as much as $635 billion a year, which is more than the yearly costs for cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.\u00a0 If that is not enough to get employers attention, the impact of employees working in pain results in lower productivity and often leads to unnecessary turnover.\u00a0 This is all happening at a time when chronic pain conditions and narcotic addiction are on the rise.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, a small <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1523\/JNEUROSCI.2408-18.2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published in The Journal of Neuroscience provides evidence and a reminder that the body\u2019s own ability to manage pain can be improved without a prescription.\u00a0 The remedy?\u00a0 Sleep.\u00a0 For veteran insomniacs, the research probably does not come as much of a surprise.\u00a0 They have long known that the two (sleep and pain) are closely linked, one often fueling another.\u00a0 Specifically, the study exposed a potential reason for why lack of quality sleep may amplify the pain an individual feels, moving scientists closer to bolstering the case for employers to care about employee sleep habits.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that a single night of sleep deprivation reduced a person\u2019s pain threshold by more than 15% and left a clear signature in the brain\u2019s pain-management centers.\u00a0 This was to be expected as other studies have produced similar findings, linking sleep deprivation to lower pain thresholds.\u00a0 The new finding was captured through brain imaging.\u00a0 While activity spiked in pain perception regions when participants were sleep deprived, activity also dropped significantly in areas of the brain that help manage or reduce pain.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So you have two things happening at once here.\u00a0 There\u2019s ramped up sensation to pain, and a loss of natural analgesic reaction. The fact that both of them happen was surprising.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">\u2013 Dr. Matthew Walker, Director of the Center for Human Sleep Science at U.C. Berkeley\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The researchers also determined that small deviations in the average amount of sleep from one day to another predicted the level of overall pain felt the next day.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits of quality sleep go beyond pain management, but given the trajectory of the problem, human resource teams should certainly consider this benefit when building the case for a holistic wellness program that includes sleep.\u00a0 A great place to start is educating employees on the basics: the benefits of sleep, how to tell if they are sleep deprived, and basic sleep hygiene principles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pain is cited as the most common reason Americans access the health care system and a major contributor to health care costs.
