According to Businessolver\u2019s 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessolver.com\/2017-empathy-monitor-executive-summary?hsCtaTracking=9e006e63-8034-41e9-ac00-19227993b694%7Cd49f67a6-5d50-4439-9241-5ec2bb24321f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Workplace Empathy Monitor<\/a>, empathy might be the answer. In the survey, 77% of employees would work longer hours for an \u201cempathetic employer\u201d and 60% would take slightly less pay.<\/p>\n<p><!--space--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"empathy employers drive higher retention\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wellable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screen%20Shot%202017-07-02%20at%205_06_35%20PM.png\" alt=\"empathy employers drive higher retention\" width=\"1310\" data-constrained=\"true\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of the 2,000 respondents, 92% of employees and 95% of HR professionals agreed that showing empathy is critical to retention. The type of empathy employees want from their bosses, however, does not lie in corporate social responsibility programs as previously framed. Instead, it is the benefits packages that matter.<\/p>\n<p><!--space--><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"empathetic-benefits-package\">Empathetic Benefits Package<\/h3>\n<p>So what does an \u201cempathetic benefits package\u201d look like? For starters, employees want more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellable.co\/blog\/mental-health-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mental health support<\/a>. In fact, 95% of employees want mental health to be included, yet very few programs actually address this taboo subject. They also want personal communications for information delivery instead of broad communication channels. According to the authors, one-on-one or in-person conversations increase employees\u2019 respect, which leads to higher retention.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the components of an empathetic benefit package are:<br \/>\n&#8211; Flexible work hours (96%)<br \/>\n&#8211; Paid maternity leave (96%)<br \/>\n&#8211; Medical\/health insurance (95%)<br \/>\n&#8211; Flexible work location (93%)<br \/>\n&#8211; Paid paternity leave (95%)<br \/>\n&#8211; Employer contributions to retirement plans (93%)<br \/>\n&#8211; Family benefits (94%)<br \/>\n&#8211; Educational programs (93%)<br \/>\n&#8211; Vision plan (93%)<br \/>\n&#8211; Dental insurance (92%)<br \/>\n&#8211; Career path guidance (92%)<br \/>\n&#8211; Life insurance (93%)<br \/>\n&#8211; Financial well-being programs (90%)<br \/>\n&#8211; Student loan debt repayment (90%)<\/p>\n<p><!--space--><\/p>\n<p>Most of these benefits are relatively common, suggesting that they are the baseline requirement \u2013 the bare minimum to recruit and retain talent. Interestingly, flexible work hours and work location come out on top of the list, while other soft benefits like free food or spa services didn\u2019t cut it. \u201cEmpathy is flexibility &#8211; not freebies.\u201d Yet, only 38% of employers cater to this overwhelming demand, allowing their employees to choose their work schedules and have some flexibility in work location.<\/p>\n<p>For newcomers to the empathy revolution, Businessolver provided four practices as the cornerstones of successful empathy efforts. Employers would be wise to make sure they are incorporating these practices as part of the employee retention strategy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Four practices to
