{"id":14440,"date":"2015-10-14T14:00:04","date_gmt":"2015-10-14T14:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wellable.co\/blog\/2015-10-14-who-are-the-15-of-americans-that-dont-use-the-internet\/"},"modified":"2022-10-18T03:46:16","modified_gmt":"2022-10-18T07:46:16","slug":"2015-10-14-who-are-the-15-of-americans-that-dont-use-the-internet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wellable.co\/blog\/2015-10-14-who-are-the-15-of-americans-that-dont-use-the-internet\/","title":{"rendered":"Who Are The 15% Of Americans That Don\u2019t Use The Internet?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For many of us, it is easy to think that everyone has access to and uses the internet.\u00a0 Unfortunately, this is not the case.\u00a0 Thankfully, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2015\/07\/28\/15-of-americans-dont-use-the-internet-who-are-they\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pew Research Center survey<\/a> helps identify which demographic variables, including age, educational attainment, household income, race and ethnicity, and community type, are associated with a lack of internet use.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wellable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/FT_15_07_23_notOnline_200px.png\" alt=\"FT_15.07.23_notOnline_200px\" width=\"167\" \/>Of the 15% of U.S. adults that do not use the internet, 34% did not go online because they had no interest in doing so or did not think the internet was relevant to their lives. \u00a0Another 32% of non-internet users said the internet was too difficult to use, including 8% of this group who said they were \u201ctoo old to learn.\u201d \u00a0Cost was also a barrier for some adults who were offline \u2013 19% cited the expense of internet service or owning a computer.<\/p>\n<p>These numbers are important to employers, especially those with non-office-based employees.\u00a0 As wellness technology offerings continue to grow in the market, employers need to understand which employees will be unable to access these solutions on a regular basis.\u00a0 Participation is critical to the efficacy of wellness programs.\u00a0 Fortunately, the data suggests that many of the non-internet users are out of the workforce and\/or in rural environments, which also don\u2019t have large concentrations of employers. \u00a0Income and education levels are also correlated to internet use.<\/p>\n<p>For those employers who will be challenged by non-internet users or employees without smartphones, there are ways for these organizations to promote health and wellness at their organizations.\u00a0 Some of these programs include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellable.co\/health-content\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">text messaging health tips<\/a> (Pew also shows us that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/2015\/08\/26\/americans-views-on-mobile-etiquette\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">92% of U.S. adults now have a cellphone of some kind<\/a>), having seminars, and providing flu shots.\u00a0 The key takeaway from this study is that employers must design programs for their employees and understanding their technology preference is a critical component of the design process.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Who Are The 15% Of Americans That Don\u2019t Use The Internet?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":14441,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-14440","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-facts-and-research"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v20.6 (Yoast SEO v24.8.1) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Who Are The 15% Of Americans That Don\u2019t Use The Internet?
